I ran my first marathon in December of 2024 at the Hoover Dam. I spent months preparing and was able to finish just under 5 hours. I was on track to complete it at 4 hours and 30 minutes but the last 2 miles were grueling. During an usually hot December, the race had involved going up and down stairs, into tunnels and it was one of the most physically and mentally challenging things I've ever done. I thought I'd never want to do another race again in my life. It's just so many hours of preparation, recovery, and running. It was like a second job.
I decided I want to do another race.
In early May 2027, I want to run a half marathon. I've already started easy runs, and I'm aiming to get as close to 2 hours as possible on race day. I know I am capable of it, I just have to push myself harder than I ever have. The reason I'm choosing to do it again is because I love it. I love running and have been on the track since I was a teenager. It reminds me how far I've come since my FND diagnosis in 2021, and how much more I appreciate being able to move freely when I can. We forget to be grateful for a healthy body and how easily it can be taken away from us. Running reminds me to appreciate what my body is capable of.
I rarely run outside due to FND being so unpredictable. Heat is my biggest enemy and it's just more practical for me to run on a treadmill in the A/C, where I can just bail and walk to my car if something goes wrong. Inside a gym I have access to water at any time and I don't have to carry anything with me while I am running, it's the ideal set up.
